Sasha introduces new label, “Last Night on Earth”

Sasha’s label Last Night On Earth continues to go from strength to strength, from releasing a wide range of eclectic electronic music.

Along with releases from established artists, the label continues to build careers for upcoming talent. The next release from ThermalBear is an example of the young producers coming through. Dennis White aka ThermalBear was chosen by Sasha as someone who stood out from the crowd with his classical take on modern electronic dance music.

His single ‘U Love’ featuring vocals from Maiday is an expertly crafted piece of electronic brilliance. The track, with its cleverly programmed drums and haunting synths, captures the listener and is sure to be one of those tracks that plays over and over in your head.

Sasha provides a deeper take on the original with his remix. Transforming ‘U Love’ into a sound that Sasha does better than anyone and in the way we have all admired and loved over the years.

Jaymo & Andy George present new label and compilation, Moda Black

There’s no denying that Jaymo and Andy George, pioneers on the electronic music forefront, have come a long way since their inception in 2008. In the past 4 years, the duo have been nurturing and championing some of the freshest talent around on their successful label, Moda Music. So it comes as no surprise that their hotly anticipated Moda Black compilation, due out July 9, is already receiving much buzz in the EDM scene. While Moda Music focuses on Disco, Indie and Electro based sounds, the carefully crafted Moda Black mix showcases what the new label is all about: dark, deep and avant-garde house music found in the underground circuit. The release, containing both a continuous DJ mix and the DJ-friendly unmixed tracks, features some of the scene’s most coveted producers from Eats Everything, Disclosure, Tim Green and an original track by Jaymo & Andy George. Remarkably, all thirteen tracks are 100% exclusive to the release and Moda Black label, a feat that further establishes the duo as tastemakers in the dynamic world of electronic dance music.

Moda Black is worth more than just a listen; it is worth your undivided attention and dancing shoes. Clocking in at just over an hour, Moda Black doesn’t just sound like another DJ mix, but rather a journey into the minds of the label’s creators. The duo’s insatiable appetite for electronic music is apparent as they present a collection of songs that effortlessly fit together without being too similar. The mix is perfect for any occasion: casual listening, exercising, driving or even a night on the town. With the mainstream perception of electronic dance music as “wait for the (bass) drop, then RAGE,” it is refreshing to hear a compilation that possesses a balance of thoughtful melodies and wholesome bass that true dance music provides its listeners.

What’s most impressive is that these guys have been able to produce a mix that captures a distinct sound rising from UK warehouses and underground basement parties (an area widely known for the origin and development of new electronic sounds). And that is exactly what the Moda Black label is all about- exposing humanity to sounds they may otherwise never hear. In a world where EDM is the new pop, it is imperative to have the underground tastemakers that keep setting trends for future generations to come. So if you’re a Guetta fan or just can’t get enough of Avicii, realize that this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to “electronic dance music.” Take a chance on the underground sound and listen to the Moda Black compilation. Who knows, you may even enjoy it.

Alex Niggemann’s debut LP “Paranoid Funk”

Release date: June 4, 2012 on Poker Flat Recordings

26 year-old Alex Niggemann wasn’t always making funky house music, the Berlin-based music producer used to be a classical pianist before he traversed a more technological path.

For his debut album, Alex had one goal in mind,“to create an album which is different to typical club or listening albums…. where songs fit together (even when having different styles) without being too similar“.  Alex not only accomplished his goal but also created an album full of sounds that are edgy, sexy, and at times dark yet always funky and fresh. Paranoid Funk is an entertaining “funkoction” made up of seductive club bangers and contemplative tunes fit for a chill evening at your casa. Alex planned it this way; he wanted the album to reflect the social aspect of his music and its twofold function as a dance record and the soundtrack to everyday life. Paranoid Funk is bound to be a summer 2012 hit and a future house classic. 9/10 stars

March 18: Review of Day 3 @ WMC 2012

(March 18, 2012: Martin Buttrich, LIVE at the Shelborne)

Day 3 was an all day rager, beginning at the Shelborne for the “Carl Craig & Friends” Pool Party. We arrived just as Martin Buttrich began to play (a live set). The music was really sexy and chill but still danceable and upbeat. As the crowd began to grow, Radio Slave stepped up on the decks and turned up the volume about twofold. Then, he hit everyone with a tsunami of bass. As the party heated up and the sun went down, Tiefschwarz taught us all a lesson with some old school beats and prepared us for the main event, Carl Craig.

After a whole day of chill tech house, I was prepared to see one of my favorites, Nicole Moudaber, shut down the Surfcomber pool party. By a stroke of luck, we arrived at the Surfcomber as she took the decks and a second burst of energy shot through my veins. I was completely blown away by Nicole. She is by far one of the best deejays I’ve ever seen, and here’s why:

1- She SMILES. I hate when a deejay doesn’t look like they’re having fun, makes me feel awkward.

2- She TEASES. And I mean big time. She’ll take out the bass for a full 32 bars and make you beg for it.

3- When she does bring in the bass, she throws it in your face and causes an eruption of cheers from the crowd.

4- Her energy is palpable and she celebrates with the crowd.

5- Her song selection couldn’t be better. She doesn’t give you an opportunity to rest, but only to shake harder.

So it’s suffice to say I’ve developed a little dj crush on Miss Nicole, but how could I resist the way she shakes out her curly fro after her song transitions? Too cute!

Nicole nailed it as closer and I left the place wanting more more more more MUSIC!

March 17: Review of Day 2 of WMC

Saturday was all about the Surfcomber, where Danny Tenaglia hosted his “Be Yourself” pool party featuring Miami’s finest such as Patrick M, Coco Drills, Wally Lopez, Mind Control and, of course, Danny himself. (stay tuned for video clips)

March 16: Day 1 Review of WMC

I could smell the excitement of WMC permeating throughout south beach as internationally renown artists and well connected industry leaders started to flood the island. Bikini clad women and juiced up gorillas began to crawl from under their lairs and rage like there was no tomorrow.  Although things will begin to get crazier and more congested throughout the next few days, the traffic was nothing short of the usual car-infested Miami standard. Once we finally parked and found our way around to Collins, where most of the pool parties take place, we headed to the Shelborne to check out Oscar G & friends. Luckily for us, Oscar G took the decks as we reached our destination and he was nothing short of fantastic. His set for the most part consisted of house music with little glimpses of moombahton.  He kept the energy alive and made incredibly smooth, and seamless transitions that were hard to establish. We were all into it, and the aura buzzing around the place gave me a satisfied indication of the life-changing week that’s about to unfold.

Winter Music Conference is just around the corner and I’m attending! Don’t worry, I’ll be updating everyone live from pool parties, panels, showcases and the IDMA awards! To get everyone excited, I’m sharing a WMC mix that my sensational boyfriend, DJ Phil Minnick, created (on all vinyl, too).

Who’s NOT playing Ultra this year? Best. Lineup. Ever!

Don’t Put Me In Your Box, Maya Jane Coles’ latest 4 track EP release is everything you could possibly ever want from a song: it’s sexy, it’s dark in a mystical way that keeps you coming back for more, and it’s velvety melodies permeate through your mind, releasing puffs of nitric oxide in your brain, giving you a blissful high.
This woman has been making music since she was 15 and boy does it show. Her music is abstractly layered into a symphony of sumptuous sound. And the icing on the cake is that she’s an artist too! She created the artwork for her latest release and it is a wonderfully accurate visual representation of what the EP sounds like (or at least I think so). I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next because I already know it will be pure aural ecstasy.

What used to be the kick-off party for WMC week, “Mansion Loves Electro”, is now called Benny Benassi & Friends…. and boy does he have some awesome friends: Calvin Harris, Congorock, Riva Starr. Over the past 2 years, I was lucky enough to attend this event and witness what seemed to be the turning point or start of an up-and-coming artists explosion onto the edm scene with the Beetroots two years ago, and Wolfgang last year. This year if I had to guess, I would certainly go with Congorock. I had the chance to catch up with him at Spring Massive in Baltimore and he said that he was busy at work on an album. This dood certainly has the production talent to spring himself to the next level and this event will certainly be a great opportunity to showcase his live skills.

On tap for the weekend: Palenke Soultribe

Palenke Soultribe was created in Los Angeles in 2005 by Colombian producers Juan D. Borda ( AKA Insectosound) and Andres Erazo ( AKA Popa) and later joined by drummer/percussionist A.Zuluaga.

Last night I was blessed enough to be in the right place at the right time. “Palenke Soultribe,” a progressive electo-latin (is that what you’d call it?) band hailing from California came to rock our friggin world. The venue was packed full of people waiting expectantly, so I knew I was in for a treat but I was blown away. These guys created such a big and colorful sound that truly emanated throughout the intimate and dim atmosphere. The sound was extremely contagious; everyone at Bardot stood up immediately and began dancing around. I couldn’t wait to go home and get their music. Below are a few download links. I highly encourage everyone to check them out and get in touch with your latin side!
