Blunderbuss, Jack White’s debut solo album (LP review)

And to think, Blunderbuss wasn’t even supposed to be. Jack White recorded these songs on a whim (!), after he had been stood up in the studio by RZA. In those moments when you find yourself missing The White Stripes, listen to Blunderbuss.

And then send RZA a gift basket.

This excerpt taken from “Pretty Much Amazing,” pretty much says it all. I played the album as background music while I painted today and it literally made me stop and listen. I’m so happy Jack White finally came out with his own album because we all knew it would be worth the wait. He proved us right.

Since purchasing the album on vinyl, I’ve found myself mesmerized by the beauty and deeply felt emotions that resonate on this album. Jack White doesn’t have to give interviews about his personal life, just listen to the lyrics on this album and you’ll gain a better understanding of the man living in a beautiful yet twisted blunderbuss. His lyrics are dark, yet playful and meaningful; characteristics that embody Jack White at his core. He is quoted as saying, “I’ve put off making records under my own name for a long time but these songs feel like they could only be presented under my name. These songs were written from scratch, had nothing to do with anyone or anything else but my own expression, my own colors on my own canvas.” The songs are superficially lighthearted but when you dedicate yourself to sitting down and giving the album your undivided attention, you realize this is no fairytale album. Jack White is showing you who he is, a romantic driven by emotion, passion and turmoil.

HUXLEY making moves with “Out The Box” EP

Huxley is becoming one of the brightest stars to emerge from an ever-evolving UK music scene, emerging from the underground clubs of London, Bristol, Leeds and Glasgow. Young producers are honing their talents to create new sounds influenced by the their exposure to house, techno, dubstep and garage music.  When 2020Vision approached Huxley, they specifically requested that he created a four track EP that truly reflected his skills. He responded superbly and produced the ‘Out The Box’ EP.

On the first track ‘Box Clever’ Huxley gives us pure house music with rich chords, a killer piano line and a deeply felt female spoken word vocal.  The flip side ‘Atonement’ delves into deep house with layers of subtly worked synths wrapped up around confident New York style garage beats.  ’Out of my mind’ showcases his love of diverse beats and leaves the four to the floor until late in the track enabling a far busier drum and bass workout with dubstep sentiments. The digitally exclusive ‘Feel What You Want’ sounds like a session from Secretsundaze with it’s classic 90s influenced groove and vocal hooks.

The sky is the limit for Huxley as he continues to conquer with a fine selection of releases on Tsuba, Noir, Fear Of Flying, Hypercolour and, now, on 2020 Vision with “Out the Box.”

March 18: Review of Day 3 @ WMC 2012

(March 18, 2012: Martin Buttrich, LIVE at the Shelborne)

Day 3 was an all day rager, beginning at the Shelborne for the “Carl Craig & Friends” Pool Party. We arrived just as Martin Buttrich began to play (a live set). The music was really sexy and chill but still danceable and upbeat. As the crowd began to grow, Radio Slave stepped up on the decks and turned up the volume about twofold. Then, he hit everyone with a tsunami of bass. As the party heated up and the sun went down, Tiefschwarz taught us all a lesson with some old school beats and prepared us for the main event, Carl Craig.

After a whole day of chill tech house, I was prepared to see one of my favorites, Nicole Moudaber, shut down the Surfcomber pool party. By a stroke of luck, we arrived at the Surfcomber as she took the decks and a second burst of energy shot through my veins. I was completely blown away by Nicole. She is by far one of the best deejays I’ve ever seen, and here’s why:

1- She SMILES. I hate when a deejay doesn’t look like they’re having fun, makes me feel awkward.

2- She TEASES. And I mean big time. She’ll take out the bass for a full 32 bars and make you beg for it.

3- When she does bring in the bass, she throws it in your face and causes an eruption of cheers from the crowd.

4- Her energy is palpable and she celebrates with the crowd.

5- Her song selection couldn’t be better. She doesn’t give you an opportunity to rest, but only to shake harder.

So it’s suffice to say I’ve developed a little dj crush on Miss Nicole, but how could I resist the way she shakes out her curly fro after her song transitions? Too cute!

Nicole nailed it as closer and I left the place wanting more more more more MUSIC!

March 17: Review of Day 2 of WMC

Saturday was all about the Surfcomber, where Danny Tenaglia hosted his “Be Yourself” pool party featuring Miami’s finest such as Patrick M, Coco Drills, Wally Lopez, Mind Control and, of course, Danny himself. (stay tuned for video clips)

March 16: Day 1 Review of WMC

I could smell the excitement of WMC permeating throughout south beach as internationally renown artists and well connected industry leaders started to flood the island. Bikini clad women and juiced up gorillas began to crawl from under their lairs and rage like there was no tomorrow.  Although things will begin to get crazier and more congested throughout the next few days, the traffic was nothing short of the usual car-infested Miami standard. Once we finally parked and found our way around to Collins, where most of the pool parties take place, we headed to the Shelborne to check out Oscar G & friends. Luckily for us, Oscar G took the decks as we reached our destination and he was nothing short of fantastic. His set for the most part consisted of house music with little glimpses of moombahton.  He kept the energy alive and made incredibly smooth, and seamless transitions that were hard to establish. We were all into it, and the aura buzzing around the place gave me a satisfied indication of the life-changing week that’s about to unfold.
